Newfoundland & Labrador: Soul Medicine from the Edge of the World

My recent travel to Newfoundland & Labrador inspired me once more to write about Soul Medicine throughout Canada. This province feels as though you’ve stepped into a land where earth and spirit meet at the edge of the world. Towering cliffs, colorful seaside villages, endless skies, and the whisper of ancient winds all hold a story, waiting for those who listen with their hearts.

For me, this place carries a unique kind of soul medicine — a blend of resilience, joy, and wild beauty that mirrors the healing journey we all walk.

Lighthouses – Beacons of Guidance

Everywhere you turn in Newfoundland, a lighthouse rises against the horizon. Standing firm against storms, they shine a steady light for travelers at sea.

Spiritually, lighthouses remind us of our own inner guidance. Even in life’s fog or crashing waves, there is always a light within that knows the way home. Soul healing often begins with reconnecting to that guiding spark.

Jellybean Row – The Colors of the Soul

In St. John’s, the famous “Jellybean Row” of brightly painted houses instantly lifts the heart. Each bold color is a reminder that our souls were never meant to blend into gray.

Like these vibrant homes, we too are invited to paint our lives in the colors of our spirit — joy, courage, tenderness, and expression. Healing is not only about mending what feels broken; it’s also about reclaiming the colorful essence of who we truly are.

Cloudberries – Golden Treasures in Harsh Lands

Locals call them bakeapples, but these rare berries are pure gold in the boggy landscapes of Newfoundland. Rich in vitamin C, cloudberries strengthen the body and were once essential for survival.

On a soul level, they remind us that even in harsh conditions, hidden treasures are waiting. Cloudberries teach patience, resilience, and the sweetness of discovering inner light after a long winter of the soul.

The Healing Herbs & Moss of Newfoundland

The land offers its own apothecary of medicine:

  • Yarrow – Known for protection and wound healing, yarrow supports emotional resilience, helping us strengthen our energetic boundaries.

  • Reindeer Moss – Not a moss but a lichen, it grows in the most barren places. It teaches endurance and nourishment, showing us how life finds a way even in the starkest conditions.

Together, they embody the balance of healing and endurance — much like our own path through challenges.

Puffins – Joyful Spirit Messengers

Newfoundland is also home to the charming Atlantic puffin, with its bright beak and playful flight. To watch them dart between sea and sky is to witness pure joy in motion.

Spiritually, puffins are a reminder of balance and adaptability. They are equally at home in the air, on land, and diving deep into the sea. For the soul, puffins symbolize the ability to navigate different worlds — our physical, emotional, and spiritual realms — with lightness and grace.

They also teach us the medicine of community. Puffins nest in large colonies, reminding us that while healing is an inward journey, we are not meant to walk it alone. Joy expands when it is shared.

Caribou – Endurance and Sacred Cycles

Caribou roam the wild landscapes of Newfoundland and Labrador, following ancient migration paths that stretch across vast distances. They embody endurance, stamina, and survival in some of the harshest conditions.

In many Indigenous traditions, caribou are seen as sacred beings, offering not only physical sustenance but also spiritual teachings. Their cyclical migrations mirror the cycles of life, death, and renewal — reminding us that healing unfolds in rhythms, not straight lines.

For the soul, the caribou teaches us to trust our inner compass, conserve our energy, and move steadily toward what sustains us. They whisper of resilience, balance, and the wisdom of walking in harmony with the seasons of life.

The Vikings – Courage to Cross Unknown Seas

On the northern tip of Newfoundland lies L’Anse aux Meadows, the site of the first Norse settlement in North America, dating back over 1,000 years. Here, the Vikings braved the Atlantic in wooden ships, guided only by stars, wind, and instinct.

Their story carries the medicine of courage, exploration, and vision. They dared to leave the familiar and step into the vast unknown — much like the soul does when it begins a healing journey.

For us, the Vikings remind us that new worlds of possibility open when we trust the call of the horizon. Healing, too, requires the bravery to voyage inward, to face both storms and discoveries, and to return transformed.

Labrador – Vastness and Mystery

While Newfoundland hums with music, harbors, and community, Labrador holds a different energy — wide, untouched, and expansive. It feels like a land that breathes spaciousness, inviting us to rest in silence and mystery.

From Labrador come two powerful allies:

  • Labradorite – A shimmering stone of transformation and intuition, often called the “Northern Lights trapped in stone.” It awakens inner magic and guides us through change. Labradorite is a powerful stone of transformation and magic. It helps us navigate change, strengthens intuition, and protects the aura from negative energies. It brings clarity to the mind, deepens spiritual connection, awakens creativity and inspiration, and harmonizes our energy, helping us feel balanced and aligned.

  • Labrador Tea – A traditional calming herb, it clears the mind and soothes the spirit, offering clarity on the path ahead.

It’s as if Labrador itself is whispering: healing happens not only through doing, but also through spacious being.

Northern Lights – The Dance of Soul Radiance

In Labrador, the Aurora Borealis paints the night sky in ribbons of green and violet. Indigenous stories tell of these lights as spirits dancing, ancestors guiding and celebrating from beyond.

Northern Lights Legends of Labrador

The Indigenous peoples of Labrador, like the Inuit and Innu, hold powerful stories about the Aurora Borealis. For some, the lights are believed to be the spirits of ancestors dancing across the sky, guiding and watching over their loved ones. Others say the shimmering colors are a reminder of joy, celebration, and connection between the earthly and spiritual realms.

Spiritually, the Northern Lights mirror the dance of our own soul energies. Just as they ripple and shift across the sky, so too can our inner light be freed, expressed, and witnessed. In soul healing, they symbolize

release, transformation, and the beauty of stepping into radiance after darkness.

Soul Healing at Home

Newfoundland & Labrador remind us that soul medicine is everywhere:

  • In lighthouses that teach us guidance.

  • In colorful houses that celebrate expression.

  • In herbs, moss, and berries that heal and nourish.

  • In Labrador’s vast skies and dancing lights that expand our spirit.

If this speaks to you, I invite you to explore your own inner landscapes. On my website, you’ll find a free collection of guided meditations and healing journeys — short, soul-nourishing practices designed to help you reconnect with your inner radiance.

Standing on these rugged shores, I’m reminded that healing is not a straight line. It is like the tide — flowing in and out, carrying treasures to the surface when the time is right.

And just like the lighthouses, herbs, crystals, and Northern Lights of Newfoundland & Labrador, your soul carries all the guidance, resilience, and radiance you need to blossom into your own light.
