Midlife Support

What Your Body Is Really Asking For

And How to Support It Naturally with herbal Supplements, Minerals & Natural Practices for Energy, Hormones and Well-Being After 40

There comes a moment in life - often somewhere in midlife - when the conversation with the body begins to change.

In our younger years, the body follows along. We push. We override. We manage.

And for a long time… it works. Until it doesn’t. Not as failure - but as a shift.

The body is no longer asking to be managed. It is asking to be supported. And - support does not need to be complicated.

What midlife symptoms are really about

Fatigue. Poor sleep. Hormonal shifts. Brain fog.
A body that suddenly feels… different. These are not random. They are often signs of:

  • nutrient depletion

  • nervous system overload

  • hormonal transitions

  • accumulated stress in the body

It’s the moment the body asks for a different level of care.

Let’s look into a few options, that help elevate that different level of care.

One thing that many people are “guilty” of – hydration…

Electrolytes - hydration that actually works

Sometimes fatigue is not lack of sleep - but lack of proper hydration.

Electrolytes support:

energy levels
nerve function
cellular balance

A simple shift that many overlook. Good news - you can easily diy (you can of course also buy ready made electrolytes. But if you are like me, you like to make your own 😉).

Simple Homemade Electrolyte Drink for Midlife Fatigue

Ingredients (1 liter / 34 oz)

  • 1 liter filtered water or spring water

  • ¼ teaspoon high-quality sea salt (Celtic or Himalayan).

  • Juice of (organic) ½ lemon (or lime)

  • 1–2 teaspoons raw honey or maple syrup

  • Optional: a splash of fresh orange juice

Why this works

  • Sea salt → sodium + trace minerals

  • Lemon → potassium + alkalizing support

  • Honey/maple syrup → helps transport electrolytes into cells

  • Water → hydration base

  • Sodium → supports adrenal function

  • Potassium → supports cellular energy

  • Magnesium → supports nervous system

  • Small glucose → improves mineral uptake

Electrolytes need a little glucose to be absorbed properly - that’s why a tiny bit of natural sweetener actually helps.

This mixture also supports:

  • adrenal stress

  • hormonal shifts

  • afternoon crashes

For deeper depletion (travel, sauna, stress, fatigue):

  • Add 1–2 tablespoons orange juice

  • Or a pinch of cream of tartar (natural potassium source)

  • Or a splash of coconut water (natural potassium boost)

If you need something more calming and grounding at night:

  • Warm water

  • Tiny pinch sea salt

  • Squeeze of lemon

  • No sweetener

For wired-but-tired nights: Sip slowly 30–60 minutes before bed.

Generally sip slowly and not all at once. Hydration works best when steady.

In case you are travelling (by airplane), below a diy for travel days because flying causes:

  • dehydration

  • mineral depletion

  • circulation changes

  • fatigue

Electrolytes during flying help:
prevent headaches
reduce “flight hangover”
support energy
stabilize nervous system

Travel electrolyte mix

No liquids. No drama. Just powder. For 1 serving (add to 500–750 ml water (or even better: coconut water) after security check):

  • ¼ tsp high-quality sea salt

  • 1 tsp coconut sugar (or maple sugar)

  • 1 pinch cream of tartar (potassium source)

Mix and store in a tiny glass jar or small paper sachets.

èIf someone has high blood pressure or kidney issues or sodium sensitivity, adjust salt accordingly!

Hydration as Ritual

There’s something almost symbolic about electrolytes. Midlife is often a season where we’ve given a lot. Time. Energy. Attention.

And the body quietly says: “Replenish me.”

Instead of seeing electrolytes as something functional, what if you turned them into a small daily ritual?

Not rushed. Not chugged between tasks. But prepared with intention.

  1. Fill your glass or jar with water.

  2. Add your mineral mix slowly.

  3. Stir - not shake. As you stir the water, ask yourself:

Where am I depleted right now? What would true replenishment look like?

(Midlife support isn’t only about supplements. It’s about remembering to receive.)

  1. Take one conscious breath before the first sip.

  2. Sip slowly.

Why this matters

Electrolytes support:

  • adrenal function

  • energy

  • nervous system regulation

  • hormonal balance

But ritual supports:

  • presence

  • regulation

  • self-connection

When the body feels depleted, it’s rarely just physical.

Sea Buckthorn - Nourishing the Body’s Tissues

A plant that is often appreciated during midlife is sea buckthorn.

These small orange berries are exceptionally rich in antioxidants and unique fatty acids, especially omega-7, which supports the health of skin and mucous membranes.

As hormonal levels shift during menopause, many women notice changes such as:

• drier skin
• vaginal dryness
• dry eyes or mouth
• more sensitive tissues

Sea buckthorn oil is traditionally used to help nourish and protect these tissues from within. Rather than changing hormones directly, it supports the parts of the body that often feel the effects of hormonal decline.

This makes it a gentle companion during the menopausal transition, when maintaining healthy skin, connective tissue, and mucous membranes becomes more important.

Sea buckthorn oil is often taken internally as capsules to nourish mucous membranes throughout the body. Some women also use it externally for vaginal dryness, as it supports the health and resilience of delicate tissues.

Sea Bockthorn for healthy skin - inside and out

Let’s move on to another very powerful helper:

Castor Oil - The Quiet Essential for Midlife Support

There are certain remedies that quietly stand the test of time. Not because they are trendy - but because they work. Castor oil is one of them.

Used for centuries in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and folk herbalism, castor oil has long been valued for its ability to support circulation, detoxification, and tissue nourishment.

And in midlife - when the body begins asking for deeper support - it becomes especially relevant.

Why castor oil matters in midlife

One of the main components of castor oil is ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid known for its ability to support circulation and reduce inflammation in tissues.

This makes castor oil particularly helpful when the body feels:

  • sluggish

  • congested

  • hormonally out of balance

  • or energetically “stuck”

Castor oil supports the body in several ways:

Lymphatic drainage
The lymphatic system is responsible for moving waste and toxins out of the body. Gentle stimulation through castor oil packs can help encourage this natural flow.

Liver detox pathways
The liver plays a key role in hormone metabolism, especially for estrogen. Supporting liver function can therefore indirectly support hormonal balance.

Deep tissue penetration
Castor oil has a unique ability to penetrate deeply into tissues, supporting circulation and nourishment beyond the surface of the skin.

Softening stagnation - physically and energetically
Many traditional healing systems recognize that the body can hold tension, emotions, and stagnation in certain areas - particularly the abdomen and pelvis. Castor oil helps soften and release this holding.

Simple ways to use castor oil

One of the beautiful things about castor oil is how simple it is to incorporate:

As a night oil for the face - A small amount gently massaged into the skin before bed can support hydration and skin renewal overnight. Because castor oil is thick, many people mix it with a lighter oil such as jojoba.

Belly button oiling - A traditional practice found in several cultures involves placing a few drops of oil into the belly button before bed. This area contains many small blood vessels and nerve endings and is thought to help nourish internal organs and support grounding in the body.

Castor oil packs - This is one of the most popular ways to use castor oil.

A cloth soaked in castor oil is placed over the abdomen - often over the liver area - and covered with a warm compress.

Benefits may include:

  • supporting liver function

  • encouraging detox pathways

  • improving circulation in the abdomen

  • calming the nervous system

Many people notice deeper relaxation after using castor oil packs regularly.

Womb massage - supporting the pelvic center

Another traditional practice involves gentle abdominal or also called womb massage using castor oil.

For many women, the pelvic area can carry tension accumulated over years - from stress, hormonal fluctuations, childbirth, or emotional experiences.

Castor oil massage in this area can support:

womb and pelvic health
hormonal balance
improved circulation in the reproductive organs
emotional release stored in the belly
deep relaxation of the pelvic floor

This practice can be done very gently and slowly, allowing the body to soften rather than forcing any release.

Many women love the idea of castor oil packs… but never actually try them because it sounds messy or complicated.

The truth is, it doesn’t have to be.

A simple reusable pack makes the whole process effortless - apply the oil, place the pack, and relax while your body does the rest. Or sleep with it through the night.

Let’s now have a look into a few supplements the body simply needs after a certain age:

OPC - protection where it truly counts

OPC (oligomeric proanthocyanidins). There are whole books written about this powerful little helper. But I shall keep it short. A very powerful antioxidant supporting:

circulation
skin elasticity!!
brain and cardiovascular health!!
protection from oxidative stress (a key driver of aging)

This is not about reversing time - but about supporting the body at a cellular level.

Vitamin D - the light within

Do you live in a place where sunlight is limited, specially in winter? Chances are, your Vitamin D is pretty depleted. It supports:

bone health!!
immune function
mood
hormonal balance

Sometimes the body simply needs more light than it is receiving. Studies say, that worldwide most people are lacking Vitamin D. Go figure.

Omega-3 - softening inflammation

Inner, (unkown to you) inflammation often increases with age - quietly. (Inflammation is the cause of many chronic issues.)

Omega-3 fatty acids support:

brain clarity
heart health
joint comfort
reduction of chronic inflammation

Helping the body return to flow instead of friction.

Magnesium - the mineral of exhale

If there is one supplement many midlife women benefit from, it is magnesium. Magnesium is often the missing piece in a body that simply cannot switch off anymore.

And yet… this is also where confusion begins. Because not all magnesium is the same.

By midlife, many women are quietly depleted. Not because they’ve done something wrong -
but because life has been… full.

Magnesium supports:

nervous system regulation
muscle relaxation
deeper, more restorative sleep
stress resilience
hormone balance

It is, in many ways, the mineral that helps the body come down again. If you lack magnesium, you might have sleep or gut issues:

Sleep support

Sleep is not a luxury. It is where the body:

  • repairs

  • regulates hormones

  • resets the nervous system

If sleep is off - everything feels harder.

Gut support

The gut influences:

energy
mood
immunity
hormone metabolism

Sometimes the most powerful shift starts here.

The confusing part: different types of magnesium

When you start looking, you’ll find:

  • magnesium citrate

  • magnesium glycinate

  • magnesium malate

  • magnesium threonate

…and a few more.

Each one works slightly differently in the body. But instead of overcomplicating it -
let’s keep it simple.

A simple way to choose

Magnesium Glycinate

👉 best for:

  • sleep

  • relaxation

  • nervous system support

This is often the most gentle and calming option.

Magnesium Citrate

👉 best for:

  • digestion

  • occasional constipation

More stimulating for the bowels - less ideal if your focus is sleep.

Magnesium Malate

👉 best for:

  • energy

  • muscle support

Often used when fatigue and body tension are present.

Magnesium Threonate

👉 best for:

  • brain function

  • mental clarity

A more specialized option, often used for cognitive support.

So… which one do you actually need?

You don’t need five different magnesiums. You need the one that supports what your body is asking for right now.

Supplements and tools are not here to fix you. They are here to support a body that is already wise.

  • low energy or fatigue

  • feeling “off” without clear answers

Midlife is not the beginning of decline. It is the moment the body becomes more honest.

And perhaps… more deserving of your attention than ever before.

Lets go on to something that is often overlooked:

Oral Health in Midlife

Oral health changes for many women in midlife, often without much explanation.

Hormonal shifts can affect the gums, saliva production, and the balance of bacteria in the mouth. Some women notice increased gum sensitivity, dry mouth, or a higher risk of inflammation.

The mouth is not separate from the rest of the body - it reflects overall health.

Supporting oral health often means supporting the body as a whole:

Minerals such as magnesium and trace minerals help maintain healthy teeth and gums
Vitamin D supports bone and tooth structure
Omega-3 fatty acids help regulate inflammation
Hydration and electrolytes support saliva production

Simple practices can also help maintain balance:

• oil pulling with organic sunflower oil
• gentle gum massage
• mineral-rich tooth care products

Like many aspects of midlife health, oral health often improves when the body receives the nutrients and circulation support it needs.

In case you have never heard of oil pulling before, here more about it:

How to practice oil pulling

Oil pulling is a simple traditional practice used in Ayurveda to support oral hygiene and balance bacteria in the mouth.

In the morning, before eating or drinking or brushing your teeth:

  1. Place one tablespoon of organic sunflower oil in your mouth.

  2. Gently swish the oil through your teeth for 5–10 minutes.

  3. Spit the oil into a tissue or the trash (not the sink, as oil can clog pipes).

  4. Then rinse your mouth with water for about the same amount of time you spent oil pulling.

  5. Brush your teeth as usual.

In traditional practice it is said that some toxins are oil-soluble while others are water-soluble, so both steps support a more complete cleansing of not only the mouth but also the cavities we have in our skull.

Many people notice that oil pulling supports the sinus area. Because the mouth, teeth, and sinuses are closely connected, this gentle daily practice can help keep these spaces clear and balanced. For those who experience recurring sinus congestion or sinus infections, oil pulling may be a supportive addition to their daily routine.

Additionally many people find that regular oil pulling supports gum health, fresher breath, can prevent tartar build up and overall oral balance.

oral health in midlife

Now lets look into another “phenomenon”…

Cellulite in Midlife - Why It Appears and What Helps

Many women notice something surprising in midlife: Cellulite that seems to appear almost overnight.

Even if weight hasn’t changed. Even if lifestyle is the same. (Ok ok, many women have it during younger ages already, but what can appear during post menopause is “next level”…)

This is very common after menopause and is often connected to a few natural changes in the body.

Collagen is what keeps skin firm and structured. After menopause, collagen production gradually decreases, making the connective tissue network less supportive.

Hormonal shifts play an important role. Estrogen supports circulation, collagen production, and healthy connective tissue. When estrogen levels decline, the skin and underlying connective structures can become thinner and less elastic.

This makes it easier for fat cells beneath the skin to push upward, creating the dimpling we recognize as cellulite.

At the same time, lymphatic flow and circulation can slow, allowing fluids and metabolic waste to linger longer in tissues. This can make cellulite more visible.

This allows fat cells beneath the skin to push upward more easily, creating the dimpling many women recognize as cellulite.

Supporting circulation and lymph flow

With age and stress, circulation and lymphatic movement can slow.
When fluids and metabolic waste are not cleared efficiently, tissue can begin to feel more congested.

This stagnation can make cellulite more visible.

Practices that stimulate circulation, massage and lymph movement can make a noticeable difference over time.

Helpful approaches include:

• regular walking or rebounding
• dry brushing
• lymphatic massage
• castor oil packs over the abdomen
• strength training

Movement is one of the most powerful ways to stimulate the body’s natural drainage and tissue renewal.

Supporting connective tissue

Collagen production naturally decreases with age, but the body continues to build collagen when given the right building blocks.

Rather than relying on collagen powders, what truly supports collagen formation and skin elasticity is providing the body with the nutrients it needs to produce its own collagen.

These include:

adequate protein intake
vitamin C, essential for collagen formation
zinc and copper, important for connective tissue
• antioxidants that protect existing collagen like OPC from grape seed or pine bar

Omega-3 fatty acids

Foods rich in these nutrients support the body’s ability to maintain strong and resilient connective tissue.

Hydration and minerals

Healthy connective tissue also depends on proper hydration and mineral balance.

Electrolytes, magnesium, and adequate water intake support circulation and tissue function. When tissues are well hydrated and nourished, the skin often appears smoother and more resilient.

A gentle truth

Cellulite is extremely common in women - even in those who are younger, healthy and active.

The goal isn’t to fight the body. It’s to support circulation, nourishment, and connective tissue health so the body can function at its best.

Often, small and consistent practices bring the most noticeable changes.

If you’re curious about some of the supportive tools mentioned here - including castor oil packs and connective-tissue support supplements - you’ll find them in my SoulCompact Apothecary: https://soulcompact.com/body-care-

Support detox pathways

The liver and lymphatic system help process hormones and metabolic waste.

This is where practices like castor oil packs can be surprisingly supportive, especially when used consistently.

Foods that can worsen cellulite

Some foods can contribute to inflammation, fluid retention, and connective tissue stress, which may make cellulite more noticeable.

These often include:

refined sugar and high-sugar foods, which can damage collagen through a process called glycation
highly processed foods, which tend to contain inflammatory fats and additives
excess salt, which can increase water retention in tissues
refined carbohydrates such as white bread and pastries that cause rapid blood sugar spikes
alcohol, which can affect circulation and liver function when consumed regularly

Reducing these foods doesn’t mean perfection is required - but creating a diet rich in whole foods, healthy fats, protein, and antioxidants supports connective tissue and circulation from within.

Beyond Supplements - Supporting the Body Through Frequency

Not all support for the body comes in the form of nutrients.

Our nervous system and cells also respond to frequency and vibration. This is where newer wellness technologies are becoming interesting companions to traditional practices.

One of the tools I personally enjoy working with is the Vibe device from Resona. It works with gentle vibrational frequencies designed to support the body's natural regulatory systems.

The device includes over 50 different programs, addressing areas such as:

• sleep support
• migraine support
• brain fog and mental clarity
• hormonal balance and PMS
• stress regulation
• focus and ADHD support
• healthy aging and cognitive support

Because the body responds to different frequencies in different ways, these programs aim to support the nervous system, circulation, and cellular communication.

It’s one of those tools that is difficult to explain until you experience it - which is why I always recommend people explore it and feel what it does for their own system. In our household, hubby and I are basically taking turns with it
